Attached to the 1st infantry division{ the BIG RED ONE } for the assault on Normandy.
little known is the fact that the 2nd infantry division also had members assigned to the initial assault wave on DDay.
men from the 1st and 2nd infantry, the 741st, 743rd tank battalions, 610 engineer light equipment company along with naval combat demo unit and army engineers made up a special unit known officially as Special Engineer Task Force{SETF}.
the SETF was broken down into assault gap teams as follows
1 officer
25 enlisted men { 3-5 men from 2nd I.D. on each team }
one medic
one Naval Combat demolition unit
one 27 man army engineer unit
1 tank dozer
2 sherman tanks
Due to manpower shortages approximately 150 engineers from the 2nd engineer battalion and infantry personnel from the 9th, 23rd and 38th infantry regiments of the 2nd { Indianhead } infantry division.
9th regiment and 2nd engineering companies had 741st co's."A" and "D" tanks assigned to them.
