Synopsis
Disguised as a B picture, this action adventure wittily penned by
Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett follows the perils of a lone
British spy, Corporal John J. Bramble (Franchot Tone), who has been
left behind in a hotel in the Sahara after his army has been forced
to retreat. He then attempts to crack open the secret plan of one of
the hotel's other inhabitants--Erwin Rommel. Known as the Desert Fox,
Rommel, it turns out, is none other than the victor of the battle
from which Bramble¿s army has retreated.
Description
This humorous action-packed adventure directed by Billy Wilder and
cowritten by Wilder and Charles Brackett is an accomplished military
yarn. A British corporal, John J. Bramble (Franchot Tone), has been
left behind after his army has been defeated at a battle in the
Sahara. While holed up and incognito in a remote desert hotel that is
quickly becoming a headquarters for the Germans, he attempts to
discern the information hidden in the secret strategy of his enemy in
residence, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel (Erich von Stroheim). Bramble
hopes to penetrate the logic behind the strategy¿s code name, the
Five Graves. While attempting to maintain his disguise and secure the
fate of the British in Egypt, he must battle with the Nazis and lose
the woman he loves. Intense, political, and intelligent, FIVE GRAVES
TO CAIRO is a tribute to Wilder¿s directorial prowess. It is also
a
clear predecessor to the well-known cinematic adventures of George
Lucas¿s legendary action hero, Indiana Jones. A remake of HOTEL
IMPERIAL, the screenplay is based on a play by Lajos Biro.
